The Second Article

Verbs of the Creed and Preaching – How Christ Conveys the Content of His Life

When we confess the Second Article of the Creed we are doing more than speaking about a Savior who isolates Himself. When we confess the Second Article of the Creed we are doing much more than speaking about cold events in history. Christians in every age are active participants in the life and events of the Crucified and Risen Lord. He sees to it. How? To answer that question is to enter into one of the most spiritually fascinating and compelling areas of divine activity. The unified portrait of Jesus’ once for all work which we confess in the Creed and the ongoing ministry of the second person of Holy Trinity in the Divine Service will be examined and exalted.

Pastor Wiley Smith

Rev. Wiley James Smith is pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church of Redlands, California. Wiley matriculated from the University of Oregon (go ducks) with a B.A. in psychology in 1986. The great blessing of his life came when he met his bride, Alise Delaine, nee Larsen, in the summer of ’86 and by her was introduced to the Lutheran Church. The happy couple was married in the spring of ’87 and the Navy moved them to So. Cal – Wiley was assigned to Naval Air Station Miramar. Grace Lutheran Church in Escondido was their home church at that time and they engaged in youth work there. After being honorably discharged from the Navy it was apparent that the holy ministry was beckoning and Wiley entered Concordia Theological Seminary in 1991. After graduating with a M. Div. in 1995 Wiley pursued the S.T.M. degree and served as graduate assistant in the Department of Pastoral Ministry and Missiology at the seminary. In 1996 Wiley received a call to serve as pastor in Redlands and has been remarkably blessed by his time in that warm and faithful congregation. Wiley and Alise are the proud parents of three children, daughter Madison (18), and sons Wiley (the 5th – 13) and Samuel (9). Pastor Smith is an avid tennis player, soccer and track spectator, and yard worker – just don’t take him shopping or ask him to fix anything mechanical.
